Hiking Mount Jo in the Adirondacks At Peak Fall Foliage

Mount Jo is one of the most popular hikes in the Adirondack Mountains. It also has the parking lines and crowded summits to prove it. After seeing scenic panoramic shots of the view from Mount Jo on Instagram and TikTok, I wanted to see the mountain views for myself. I thought it was good timing to attempt the hike during fall with all the changing colors of the leaves. Apparently, so did dozens of other hikers.

I happened to visit Mount Jo on a record-breaking peak fall foliage weekend. Over 500 cars reportedly parked along the road at one point, making some hikers tack on an extra 2+ miles of walking before making it to the trailheads. While I predicted there would be some crowds, the huge line of cars in the overflow parking was a shock. So, I wanted to share a realistic play-by-play of what a busy day on a popular trail looked like beyond the elevation gain.

Here’s what I wish I knew before I hiked Mount Jo in the Adirondacks during the peak fall foliage season.

There’s plenty to pack into an autumn weekend, from hiking, biking, exploring, shopping, to enjoying a campfire or two. Fall is one of my favorite times to visit not only because of the fall foliage colors, but because the area has such a cozy, friendly, small-town feel that makes me feel right at home.

The Best Things to Do in the Adirondacks This Fall

Fall is short and best spent in the Adirondack Mountains surrounded by the changing red, orange, and golden leaves. There are over 100 towns located in the Adirondack Park, making it hard to choose just one to explore during the autumn season. Instead of spending hours reading guidebooks or sorting through Yelp reviews, I put together an Adirondack weekend guide so you can make the most of your fall weekend in New York State.

I’ve been traveling to the Adirondacks for years and love hiking these trails and supporting local businesses. There are tons of great peaks to hike for all levels of hikers. Plus, a lot of cute restaurants for a girls’ trip. I also love stopping by great breweries for a pint at the end of a long day exploring. Whether you want to hike High Peaks out by Lake Placid or take in fall foliage from a gondola ride in North Creek, there are a ton of great recommendations in this guide to help you enjoy your Adirondack autumn adventure.

Check out my guide to some of the best things to do in the Adirondacks in New York this fall.
