The Best Things to Do in the Adirondacks This Fall

Fall is short and best spent in the Adirondack Mountains surrounded by the changing red, orange, and golden leaves. There are over 100 towns located in the Adirondack Park, making it hard to choose just one to explore during the autumn season. Instead of spending hours reading guidebooks or sorting through Yelp reviews, I put together an Adirondack weekend guide so you can make the most of your fall weekend in New York State.

I’ve been traveling to the Adirondacks for years and love hiking these trails and supporting local businesses. There are tons of great peaks to hike for all levels of hikers. Plus, a lot of cute restaurants for a girls’ trip. I also love stopping by great breweries for a pint at the end of a long day exploring. Whether you want to hike High Peaks out by Lake Placid or take in fall foliage from a gondola ride in North Creek, there are a ton of great recommendations in this guide to help you enjoy your Adirondack autumn adventure.

Check out my guide to some of the best things to do in the Adirondacks in New York this fall.

Why Are The Road Signs In The Adirondacks Different Colors?

We know National Parks have big welcome signs, and of course there are signs telling people when they drive into a new state across America. In Upstate New York, I look forward to seeing the iconic brown-and-yellow road signs welcoming drivers to the Adirondack Park; it’s the first sign that I’m one inch closer to my favorite places in New York State. There are dozens of “Entering Adirondack Park” signs, shaped like the park, and all the road signs throughout the park are also brown and yellow. I took a deep dive into the history of the road signs in the Adirondacks, how they came to be, and why they’re all brown and yellow.

5 Weekend Road Trips Under 5 Hours From NYC

My favorite trip is a road trip, but I have my limit on how much time I can spend in a car without losing my mind. Living right near New York City, I’m familiar with how frustrating traffic can get, especially when you’re trying to get out of town. (Hopefully, gas prices will start going down before I have to start driving this summer.) Luckily, there are so many great spots within a five-hour drive radius that make the headache of stop-and-starts so worth it. Here are five weekend road trips within a day’s drive from New York City that I would recommend bumping up on your list this summer.
